Gita Drishti is a web application built with Next.js that provides the following features:
- Verse of the Day: Displays a daily shloka (verse) from the Bhagavad Gita, including Sanskrit text, transliteration, and explanations in Hindi and English.
- Random Shloka: Allows users to fetch a random shloka for inspiration.
- Favorites: Enables users to save shlokas to their device's localStorage for later access.
- Archive: Provides a calendar-based interface to browse past shlokas.
- Ad Display: Includes placeholders for advertisements, which may be replaced with real ad content in the future.
- Planned Features: Text-to-speech functionality for shlokas (currently disabled but scaffolded).
The Service is provided free of charge, with no user accounts or subscriptions required.
3. User Responsibilities
As a User, you agree to:
Acceptable Use:
- Use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes only.
- Not modify, reverse-engineer, or attempt to access the Service's source code or underlying data (e.g., shlokas.json) beyond what is provided through the user interface.
- Not use the Service to engage in unlawful, harmful, or disruptive activities, including distributing malware, spamming, or violating intellectual property rights.
- Comply with all applicable laws and regulations while using the Service.
Device Security:
- You are responsible for maintaining the security of your device, including protecting your browser's localStorage where Favorites data is stored.
- Gita Drishti is not liable for loss of Favorites data due to device issues, browser settings, or user actions (e.g., clearing localStorage).
4. No User Accounts
Gita Drishti does not require or offer user accounts. All user interactions (e.g., saving Favorites) are managed client-side via localStorage on your device. You acknowledge that:
- Favorites data is stored locally and may be lost if you clear your browser data or switch devices.
- Gita Drishti does not maintain backups of your Favorites data on its servers.
5. Intellectual Property Rights
Ownership:
- Gita Drishti, including its design, code, user interface, and curated shloka content in shlokas.json (excluding the original text of the Bhagavad Gita, which is in the public domain), is owned by Gita Drishti or its licensors. All rights are reserved under the MIT License, as specified in the LICENSE file.
- The Service's branding, logos, and visual design are proprietary to Gita Drishti.
User License:
- You are granted a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes, subject to these Terms.
- You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from the Service's content or code without prior written permission, except as permitted under the MIT License for open-source contributions.
User-Generated Data:
- Any data you generate (e.g., saved Favorites) remains your responsibility and is stored locally on your device. Gita Drishti does not claim ownership of this data.
6. Privacy and Data
Your use of the Service is subject to our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your information. Key points include:
- Minimal data collection, primarily anonymized usage data via Google Analytics (if enabled).
- Favorites are stored in your device's localStorage, not on our servers.
- No personal information (e.g., name, email) is required to use the Service.

7. Advertisements
- The Service includes placeholders for advertisements (AdBanner), which may be replaced with real ad content in the future.

- You acknowledge that ads may be displayed at intervals (e.g., after every three Favorites) to support the Service's free access.
8. Disclaimers
Service Availability:
- Gita Drishti is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted access.
- We do not guarantee the Service will be available at all times, free from errors, or compatible with all devices or browsers.
Content Accuracy:
- While we strive to provide accurate translations and explanations of Bhagavad Gita shlokas, we do not warrant the completeness or accuracy of the content. The original Sanskrit text is in the public domain, and our curated translations are provided for educational purposes only.
- Users are encouraged to consult authoritative sources for scholarly or religious interpretations.
Planned Features:
- Features like text-to-speech are planned but not currently active. Gita Drishti is not liable for delays or non-delivery of planned features.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- Gita Drishti, its affiliates, and contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to loss of data (e.g., Favorites), loss of profits, or emotional distress.
- Our total liability for any claim related to the Service shall not exceed $50 USD.
- You agree that this limitation is a fundamental element of these Terms and that the Service would not be provided without it.
10. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Gita Drishti, its affiliates, and contributors from any claims, damages, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from:
- Your violation of these Terms.

11. Termination
By You:
- You may stop using the Service at any time. To remove Favorites data, clear your browser's localStorage or use the Service's interface to delete saved shlokas.
By Gita Drishti:
- We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at our discretion, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms or engage in activities that harm the Service or other users.
- Upon termination, your right to use the Service will cease, but data stored in localStorage will remain on your device unless manually deleted.
12. Modifications to Terms
We may update these Terms to reflect changes in our Service, legal requirements, or operational needs. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised Effective Date. For significant changes (e.g., new features impacting user rights), we will provide notice via the Service. Your continued use of the Service after updates constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

Gita Drishti shall not be liable for any failure to perform its obligations under these Terms due to events beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to natural disasters, server outages, or third-party service failures (e.g., Google AI or ad providers).
14. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

- These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict of law principles.
- Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in San Francisco, California.
Dispute Resolution:
- You agree to first attempt to resolve any disputes informally by contacting us through our Contact Us page.
- If a dispute cannot be resolved informally within 30 days, it may proceed to the courts specified above.
15. General Provisions
- Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
- Entire Agreement: These Terms, along with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Gita Drishti regarding the Service.
